Redefining the Dream Job: It’s Bigger Than the Bag
I used to think the dream job was all about securing the bag.
Growing up in a single-parent household and as a first-gen Yoruba babe, you get why.
The goal was stability. Freedom. Options. I dreamed of the kind of job that let you book business class for offsites and not think twice before buying first-class flights. And sure, that version of success still hits.
But after 8 years working in tech, I’ve realized the real dream job? It’s one that gives you more than just money—it gives you wealth.
This framework, coined by Sahil Bloom in his book 📖The 5 Types of Wealth, completely reframed how I think about work. Here’s what it taught me:
And if you’re a visual learner, I break all of this down in this 📹TikTok video.
1. 💸 Financial Wealth
Let’s be real. “Just gimme my moneeey.”
Rent is due, vacations aren’t free, and skincare, body care, and healthcare? Non-negotiables. Especially in this economy. Financial wealth isn’t about excess—it’s about security, freedom, and the ability to invest in yourself without guilt.
2. 🕰️ Time Wealth
What’s the point of having money if you don’t have time to enjoy it?
Riddle me that.
A dream job respects your time. It gives you flexibility, autonomy, and the ability to live—not just work. I want my mornings to start with movement, not meetings.
3. 💃🏾 Social Wealth
“Your network is your net worth” might be a cliché, but it’s also the truth. The right mentors, colleagues, and friends can change the entire trajectory of your career—and actually make work feel joyful. A dream job isn’t just about the work you do, it’s about who you do it with.
4. 🧠 Mental Wealth
No job is worth spiraling over at 2am, *all the BIG tech girlies say amen*.
No job should give you the Sunday scaries so intense you’re Googling “how to disappear” by 3pm. Mental wealth means peace of mind, boundaries, and a role that doesn’t consume your entire sense of self.
5. 💪🏾 Physical Wealth
Can we please stop glorifying burnout in 2025? The '“you sleep, we grind” is not the flex you think it is.
A dream job shouldn’t have you running on fumes or sacrificing your sleep. I need a job that lets me actually go to the gym—not just donate to it monthly (again, in this economy?? Under this administration?? Please.)
In this season of my life, I want it all. Not in a greedy way—but in an intentional way. A job that provides balance, community, peace, and purpose.
So if you’ve been chasing the dream job based on salary alone… maybe it’s time to zoom out and ask:
What kind of wealth am I really working for?
