January Got Hands but God Has Legs
I know, I know — today isn’t Sunday, but January’s end feels like the perfect time for a Sunday devo journal entry.
_
If I were to describe January 2025 in one phrase, it’d be what I blurted out in a team meeting this week:
Bro, January got hands, came in swinging!
When I was in middle school, I was in what we called a girl “gang,” *rolls eyes, because WHY?*
and one day me and my girl indeed showed these other girls we got hands.
Not my proudest BC (before Christ) moment, but God uses all things. And I share this because, honestly, world events this month have left so many of us feeling just like that—floored, knocked out, struggling to get back up.
But hold on sis. There’s hope.
January Got Hands BUT God Has Legs
Let the people say period!
January may have caught many of us off guard, but nothing surprises God. He’s omniscient. He’s sovereign.
When I think about how this month has played out, I can’t help but remember that this isn’t the first time chaos tried to shake people’s faith. The Bible is full of moments where storms raged, hope seemed lost, and yet… God remained in control.
Storms May Rage, But God Remains
In Mark 4:35-41, the disciples found themselves in a violent storm, panicking while Jesus was asleep—completely unbothered.
It’s giving He knows something they don’t.
When they finally woke Him, He didn’t panic. He didn’t scramble. He simply spoke to the storm: Peace, be still.
📌 Key Takeaway: Even when life feels out of control, God is never shaken. He has the power to bring peace to the chaos.
When Hope Feels Buried, God Still Speaks
In John 11, Lazarus had been dead for four days. It was over—at least to human eyes. His sisters, Mary and Martha, told Jesus, You’re too late.
But God wasn’t done.
Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb, proving that even when a situation looks completely buried, God still has the final say (as my Nigerian aunties would say).
📌 Takeaway: Just because things seem delayed or dead to our human eyes doesn’t mean God isn’t working behind the scenes.
I’m not here to promise that things will get better tomorrow. I’m not even here to say we’ve seen the worst.
That’s not my weight to carry. It’s not my responsibility to predict the future; I serve a God who is already there.
What I do know is this: this isn’t the first time a season has tried to show us its hands. And yet, time and time again, we find our footing on Jesus—the solid rock—so that we don’t fall into worry, fear, or doubt.
Finding Steady Ground
After what felt like 75 days of January coming in swinging, I’ve been intentional about finding my footing on Jesus—choosing habits that anchor me rather than letting the chaos dictate my steps. Here’s what’s been keeping me steady:
📖 Reading – Five books down this month, suddenly, writing a novel feels within reach (first draft in the works).
📝 Journaling – Treated myself to a personalized medieval-inspired journal from Etsy. Now all I need is a feathered quill and a beautiful gown from The Gilded Age.
🎧 Listening – Two playlists have kept me anchored: Year of Completion & Ground Shaking Worship. When the noise of life gets too loud, these are my reset buttons.
🫂 Community – I’ve spent A LOT of time with people who are nearest and dearest to me this month. Sometimes, the best way to find your footing is in the company of those who remind you who you are.
So yes, January threw its punches, but my God moves mountains.
— After reading Sunday devo, I often find solace in worship music. If you're inclined to do the same, here are some of my favorite 🎵playlists.
