Just Gimme My Money: How to make More in your Career

Welcome to the first installment of Weekly Job Hunting Tips! This week, I’m sharing the roadmap I’m using to make 2025 my most successful year yet. Whether you’re looking to grow within your current role or land a higher-paying one, these strategies will set you up for career success.

Just Gimme My Money 🤌🏾

Let’s be real: increasing your income is a MUST-HAVE for living the life you want to live in 2025. Making more money at work usually boils down to two approaches. Both require effort, but they approach growth from different angles.

For my visual learners, here’s the 📹TikTok video behind this blog post.

🏃🏾‍♀️ Playing the Long Game

As someone who runs 5 miles most mornings (yes, I’m bragging), I’ve fully embraced the “it’s a marathon” mindset. This approach is all about leveling up within your current role and laying the groundwork for long-term success.

Here’s how I make it happen:

  • Building Relationships with Decision-Makers: Relationships matter. Connect with people in the rooms you’re not in—the ones who influence promotions, raises, and projects. The right people can vouch for your work, highlight your impact, and bring your name into conversations you’re not part of. Sometimes, it’s not just about working hard—it’s about working smart by getting on the radar of the right people. Corporate girlies call it strategic visibility.

  • Being LOUD About Your Work: The workplace isn’t the place to be humble, save it for your Grammy speech.  If you don’t talk about your impact, no one else will. So, speak up about the wins you’re driving—whether it’s hitting a target, leading a successful project, or contributing to company goals. Its called #impact! When leadership knows your impact, you’re more likely to stand out during performance reviews.

💡 Why January? Start the year strong by positioning yourself as someone who delivers results.

🚗💨 Taking the Fast Lane

Sometimes, staying put just isn’t the move—because you’ve got to put YOU first. A higher paycheck might mean chucking up the deuces ✌🏾 and heading toward your next opportunity.

Here’s why:

  1. Teams have refreshed budgets.

  2. Vacancies from end-of-year transitions are now open.

  3. New roles are being created to align with business goals for the year.

How to Maximize Your Job Search:

  • Look Beyond Job Postings: Not every role is posted as a job. Use LinkedIn’s search bar to find “#hiring” posts from recruiters or hiring managers.

  • Turn On the ‘Open to Work’ Feature: Let recruiters know you’re not close off. This subtle move can make a big difference in getting inbound opportunities.

Why This Matters

Whether you’re working toward a promotion or looking for a new role, the cheat code is having a strategy. By strategically planning your career moves, you can set the foundation for a year of financial growth and personal empowerment.
